A NZTA spokeswoman said as of November 1, 2016, about 24,000 vehicles use the intersection at Main South Rd and Barters Rd each day. She said there were 19 injury crashes at the intersection of Main South Rd and Barters Rd between 2011 and 2015. The project is planned to take 15 months to complete. Along with the construction of the bypass, stage 2 of the Christchurch Southern Motorway project has begun to improve congestion problems for motorists commuting between Halswell and Rolleston.

„„ By Georgia O’Connor-Harding HEAVY CONGESTION in the Hornby business area could be mitigated with a $15 million plan for a new bypass to be constructed through Waterloo Business Park. But it could come at a cost of Pound Rd residents putting up with an increase of heavy vehicles driving past their homes daily. Plans are under way for the NZ Transport Agency to upgrade the intersection at Barters Rd, Pound Rd and Main South Rd to cater for increased traffic from Waterloo Business Park. Waterloo Business Park assistant development manager Joel Webber said it is expected between 3000-5000 people will be working at the park when it is completed. Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton community board chairman Mike Mora said while the intersection would ease congestion, the new bypass would send trucks along Pound Rd. “If heavy trucks are coming from the south going north they will either come up Main South Rd at least to Carmen Rd, turn left and then head north. “They won’t need to with this new intersection at Pound Rd

Last week’s front page on the maintenance of parks and berms in Halswell certainly hit a note with residents. It looks from the amount of letters on the subject (page 7) that it has been a source of frustration for residents – to the extent that we had to do some careful editing of a couple! In February, 74 Canterbury University students will take up residence for the academic year at the former Bupa St Nicholas Care Home site, on Kirkwood Ave. When proposed, the hostel was contentious, with concerns over noise. They have resolved that but Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board chairwoman Helen Broughton wants to ensure residents have enough parking and it is not soaked up by students. Move to stop students parking all day By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A FORMER Upper Riccarton rest home that has been converted into a student hostel could have parking restrictions introduced around it. Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton has made a request for the board to put in parking restrictions on Kirkwood Ave, between Clyde Rd and the former Bupa St Nicholas Care Home site. In February, 74 students will move into the hostel for the academic year. The restrictions would stop students from the hostel parking in the street all day. A Canterbury University spokeswoman said a car park will be put in place for students. Ms Broughton said it is a small action the city council can take to make things easier for residents. She said if it was supported, the parking restrictions will need a staff report and nearby residents will be consulted. The conversion of the former elderly care facility into a student hostel has been controversial among residents.
Clyde Rd resident Jim Nolan said he thinks parking restrictions are probably a good idea – as long as residents can have a permit to park as long as they want. Residents were also concerned about noise associated with the outdoor recreational area, which was proposed to be as close as two to three metres from residents’ homes. But residents said that since the recreational area was switched to the west side, they are happy for the hostel to go ahead. Kirkwood Ave resident David Adams said he was pretty relaxed about the conversion in spite of not supporting it initially. The student hostel is now under development by Naylor Love Construction, with construction beginning this month. A Canterbury University spokeswoman said the majority of renovation work will take place inside the building. She said a limited number of external work will be carried out as part of the project, including building new bike sheds and installing an acoustic fence.

The surgery was a success and 4 weeks on, Penny is a happy, active, normal wee puppy with a prosthetic right eye and normal vision out of the left eye.
Recently Dr Steve Heap examined 20 week old Beagle puppy called “Penny”, who presented as a referral with a painful, partially closed right eye. Penny had unfortunately been scratched in the eye by a slightly grumpy older resident cat. Steve diagnosed a cataract in this eye, with phacouveitis and serous glaucoma all in a little puppy. Glaucoma is when there is increased intraocular pressure causing pain and discomfort. Steve had discussed with the owners that this right eye had a hopeless prognosis for vision. Topical eye medications were instigated to control the pain and inflammation and rising pressure in the eye. Steve also discussed that if these medications didn’t hold this condition, Penny’s eye would need to be enucleated. Pretty quickly it was noticed that the right eye had deteriorated beyond medical therapy. Enucleation ( removal) of the eye and placement of an intrascleral prosthesis ( glass bead eye) was surgically undertaken to relieve Penny from a life of medication and pain.
Another interesting ophthalmology case for Dr Steve Heap came from the SPCA. A 5 month old stray sneezing kitten was examined by Steve and found to have no lateral upper eyelids in both the left and right eyes, a condition called Bilateral Upper Lateral Eyelid Agenisis. As a result the eyes were sore, dry and constantly irritated by hair rubbing on the cornea (the sensitive clear window of the eye). Steve trialled lubricants and antibiotic ointments in the eyes in the hope the eyes would be comfortable long term, but this wasn’t the case. The kitten was taken to surgery and Steve carefully and intricately created upper eyelids by harvesting strips of skin taken from below the lower lids. All in all a successful outcome for this wee kitten who will be rehomed and avoid a lifetime of medication.
Not all pets with enucleated eyes need to have prosthetics placed. Steve will often enucleate an eye and then stitch the lids together. This ends up cosmetically looking fine. Due to Penny’s very young age, her owners felt a prosthetic eye would look more pleasing on their cute wee pup.

ating vulnerable people in those hours that a tsunami was a possibility. Otherwise, the city was largely spared. Our Regional Command Centre at Kilmore St has been operating 24/7 this week to support our brigades in the affected areas. Firefighters and Urban Search And Rescue teams from Christchurch were flown to relieve the ex-
hausted Kaikoura brigade. Others have gone to Waiau. Elsewhere our national headquarters in Wellington has been evacuated until the building is cleared as sound and firefighters there have been involved in that city’s earthquake and weather issues. Not a great week for New Zealand.

Airport helps out community groups COMMUNITY groups around the city have received a helping hand from the Christchurch International Airport to continue their work in the city. Nine community groups received grants from the Christchurch Airport Community Fund. The groups included 180 Degrees Trust, Birthright Canterbury Trust, Christchurch Cathedral Choir, City Parks Community Patrol, DrugARM Trust, Halswell Hall Inc, Listen! Our Voices Count, Oak Development Trust and Papanui-Merivale Plunket. The airport’s chief aeronautical and commercial officer Justin Watson said the fund is made of coins dropped into collections boxes around the airport terminal. “We collect the money and convert the foreign currencies – as many as 14 at a time – then top up the money with a sizeable donation of our own, to support our communities – especially those which have viable projects under way but not enough funding to complete them,” he said. Mr Watson said the latest nine recipients include a radio programme for disabled citizens, a group which runs a community hall, and a group whose

Readers respond to Western News’ article on the maintenance of parks in the Halswell area: Pamela Cone – I am joining in the complaints about the lack of maintenance around Halswell. Some of the parks were mowed (very lightly) but all the mown grass has been left lying there which looks worse. A visitor said Halswell looks forgotten and neglected and I do agree. Cobra Reserve, Lancewood Drive walkway to Hindess St and Westlake Park look absolutely shocking. Rob Mugford – Read the story in the Western News. Take a drive down our street Rearsby Drive, Halswell, and you can see for yourself that our little park/ playground has not been mowed for some time, in fact I would say least a month. We haven’t seen a Delta lawnmower man for some time. I don’t believe for one moment city council’s Andrew Rutledge saying that they haven’t cut back there maintenance programme. The city council has – otherwise the grass wouldn’t be so long. Sure, growing conditions have been exceptional this spring and if they were mowing the parks as they were a couple of months ago the grass length would be under control. has printed. The reserves are in a disgraceful state. The grass gets long and when they mow it, it is so long the clippings sit and rot on top of the grass. My understanding is that the city council makes the developers put these reserves in as areas for people to use. No one can use them with all the cut grass rotting on top – it’s a joke. If they are not manageable don’t have them. We used to get mowed every seven days but now its lucky if it’s monthly. As for Mr Rutledge saying the weather has had an effect, when we get behind in our work we work on a Saturday to catch up and this is what should be written into the contractor’s agreement. We are paying the rates and we are not getting the upkeep. In general, even the entrance ways into Country Palms Drive have
been let slip. They have moss growing on them and also are in some need of some tender loving care. Christine Thompson – I would like to add my comments to the discussion around the maintenance (or rather lack of it) of the parks of Halswell. We feel the appearance of public areas is important and an expected portion of our rates we pay. Maybe councillor Anne Galloway should pay these Halswell areas a visit and then I’m sure she would realise that we residents are not reassured by her comments that the services are not being cut back. The problem has arisen due to infrequency of mowing compared to previous springs, regardless of the season’s growing conditions. We would like our park to return to its former tidy appearance, and to be once again be a pleasure to walk around.

Student’s China-visit aims to boost tourism By Georgia O’Connor-Harding AFTER CATCHING the travel bug earlier this year, Canterbury University student Nicholas Baker has flown to Beijing to take part in the Global Awareness Summer Programme. The China internship offered at Canterbury University gives students the opportunity to work alongside the Canterbury Mayoral Forum’s China Tourism Strategy. The strategy concentrates on how the Canterbury region responds to an influx of visitors from China. Mr Baker, 21, of Riccarton, travelled to Beijing with nine other students last Friday to spend three weeks at Peking University researching how to attract more Chinese to Canterbury. He first became interested in Asia when he travelled over to Bangkok to undertake demographic research with Greenpeace in January. During his time, he will participate in a Chinese cultural course and travel to some of China’s most iconic destinations before reporting back to the Canterbury Mayoral Forum. “The nature of Chinese travel is changing so we are undertaking

research about what they want to do in Christchurch . . . and conduct as much research and understanding on the cultural difference,” he said. Mr Baker said the earthquakes damaged the overall perception and confidence of visitors to the city. He said he is most excited to walk the Great Wall of China, visit the Beijing National Stadium, which housed the 2008 Olympics, and learn Chinese boxing.
He said he became interested in China because it has one of the biggest economy’s in the world and is a huge trading partner with New Zealand. To fund his trip, Mr Baker received a $500 grant from the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board and took part in a clinical medical trial to aid breast cancer research. Mr Baker is in his third year at Canterbury University, and is studying towards a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts.

High school Dragons’ Den yields top ideas By Georgia O’Connor-Harding AN URBAN obstacle course and a rubbish reward system are just a few of the ideas Hornby High students have come up with to make the community a better place. Sergei Kuzmin, Anaru Jackson and Anton Hitt were awarded the top three prizes at an idea-pitching event inspired by entrepreneurial British television series Dragons’ Den. A team of five Canterbury University students and Associate Professor Billy O’Steen organised the event for students to pitch their ideas. Twenty students from Hornby High pitched ideas either in teams or as individuals. The Pitch It event was supported by the Halswell-HornbyRiccarton Community Board, which granted $5000 towards it. Sergei was awarded $1000 for coming first in the competition with his urban obstacle idea. “I think he had thought it out pretty thoroughly and he was mindful of trying to . . . get younger people outside to do stuff, but to also use an urban environment,” Prof O’Steen said.

Anaru came second with his idea to put in place a rubbish reward system. “So if you picked up rubbish in the street you could bring it in for tokens or awards,” Mr O’Steen said. Anaru received $750 and Anton received $500 to go towards their community projects. All students who took part in the event received $50 to go towards their projects. The programme aims to expand next year and invite more high schools to get involved.

Mike Sinclair has lived such an interesting life that local author Kerry Swanson wrote a book on it. The 64-year-old spent 26 years tinkering with grand prix winning motor-cycles with ‘King’ Kenny Roberts. Fraser Walker-Pearce talked to him and Mr Swanson You’ve managed to get this book Mike Sinclair – King Kenny’s Spanner Man written about you Mike. It’s 330 pages, how have you managed that? Yes, I know it’s pretty big. It’s an indication of about 26 years in the professional motor-biking arena. So were you born riding motor bikes or did you grow into it? No not really, my family doesn’t have a background of motor bike riding, I just got an interest when I was 10 or 11, my mother bought me a plastic model and that was it, motor bikes were for me. And from then on I was always out of school as quick as I could be to get on the bike and on the race track. I raced here in Christchurch and won the 250cc national championship in 1972, but then I got more into the mechanical side of things, more than the riding. Did riding ever take you to

about bike racer’s mechanic Yes, effectively. And it wasn’t one of these things that you can just learn from a book or something; there was no instruction manual, just learning from mistakes. I was working mostly with American riders and their experimental bikes. We won three world titles in that time, and a big stack of grands prix on some of the bikes I was looking after. Where are you from then? I was born in Taihape and shifted down here because dad grew up here after the war and then all over the place. And what was your favourite subject at school? My interests were kind of elsewhere, I was a bit of a schoolboy dreamer. I always knew who was leading in Europe and that kind of thing. That’s where I wanted to be. I started in a car spare parts shop while I was still at school and then as soon as I could I was into the motor bikes. I had some good help from some good people to get me where I am. People tell me that you were in effect ahead of the game with your mechanical knowledge of bikes. Why is that? The first bike I had I always kept notes on its performance. Whenever I modified it somehow

I was always checking its performance. What I did to it and how it affected its performance, that kind of thing. I’ve still got my notebooks from when I was 16. You must look at some and just say what was I thinking? Yes, absolutely! I figured out pretty early that it was an information game and the team with the most information would usually win. How did you end up in South New Brighton? I’ve lived all around the show but for a long time I wasn’t in New Zealand, just living wherever the races were. Initially for my
young family and I, we actually lived in caravans by the race track. So who is Kenny Roberts to you? In terms of motor bike racing he was a huge innovator, he transferred an American style to Europe, and he was able to generate sponsorship and money for his own team. He used the money to develop the bikes he was racing, that’s how he kept ahead of the game. He’s one of these racers that people refer to as the GOAT – the Greatest Of All Time. People have different ideas about who’s the best but Kenny was definitely one
of them for a lot of people. He was an American dirt track racer who switched to road racing, which is a huge change. And you were working for him at the time? Yes, working on the bikes and that kind of thing. I also took a position on his team after he finished racing. What hobbies do you have? I’m into windsurfing. I make boards and fins and all my own stuff really. I’m part of a worldwide speed sailing group as well. You go sailing somewhere with a GPS system, and send the data to a team in Holland, who give you a worldwide ranking. You do your thing and see how fast you go. How many people are you

competing against? I think it’s about 4000 across the world. Quite a lot. There’s nowhere in New Zealand that is particularly quick – there needs to be flat water with a lot of wind which is hard to find. Would you say you’re a bit of a speed demon? No, no. I’m too old to be a speed demon now. Have you got family in South New Brighton with you? Yes, my daughter is there and my two grand daughters. Throughout her years at Burnside High School, Anna has often been recognised for her excellence in a wide range of subjects. She has been involved in badminton, table tennis and as a Year 9 Student Support prefect as well as an International Student Leader and Academic Mentor. At Prizegiving Anna was acknowledged as first in Chemistry, third in Calculus and fourth in both Classical Studies and Physics. We wish Anna well for her Health Science studies at Otago University where she has been offered a Leaders of Tomorrow Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship.
Throughout his time at Burnside High School, Zach has been involved in a wide range of activities. As well as singing in various choirs he has served as a Year 9 Support Prefect, an Academic Mentor and an Arts and Maori Leader. He has been part of the Monetary Policy Challenge team, the United Nations group, debating club, played chess and fenced. At Graduation he was acclaimed as first in both Physics and Economics, third in Classical Studies and fifth in Statistics. Zach plans to attend Auckland University in 2017 to study Economics, Finance and Computer Studies.
Team of the Year: Volleyball Girls Senior A The Senior Girls Volleyball team are on a 60 game winning streak, having not lost a game since 2012 in the Christchurch School Sport Monday night competition. This season they won back-to-back New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Girls Volleyball Championship titles. They achieved back-to-back South Island titles and were named Canterbury Senior Division I Girls’ winners for the 4th consecutive year.
Mary Travers Award for Performance Music: Ella Dunbar-Wilcox Sportsman of the Year: Hamish Findlay Sportswoman of the Year: Alice Zeimann Alice was named MVP for the Canterbury Tournament for the 4th consecutive year. Along with this Alice and her team won back-to-back National titles at the NZ Secondary Schools’ Championships. Alice will be moving to the USA for 2017 where she will attend Minnesota University.
Hamish has been a member of the Boys 1st XI Hockey team since Year 9. As captain of the 1st XI he has not only shown leadership on the field but created a very inclusive culture within the team. The team competed well at NZ Secondary Schools’ Hockey tournament finishing 2nd. Outside of school Hamish is a team member of the NZ Hockey Junior (U19) Black Sticks Team as well as the Canterbury Under 18 Regional Mens Hockey Team.
Ella has been an active member of the choral programme for five years, most recently as a member of Bel Canto and Senior Chorale, though it is in the field of Jazz that she has made her greatest impact. She has been a member of the Burnside High School Big Band and SMP Jazz Combo. She is also a talented pianist and composer and in 2015 won the award for most outstanding original composition at both festivals. She is a member of the Christchurch Youth Jazz Orchestra and the New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra. In 2017 Ella will be attending NZSM in Wellington where she will do a Bachelor in Music majoring in Jazz.
Musician of the Year: Hamish Smith Hamish is a long serving member of the Big Band and SMP Jazz Combo, through which he has won numerous individual awards at a regional and national level. He is a member of the Christchurch Youth Jazz Orchestra and the New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra and a former member of the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Symphony Orchestra. He has played in the Burnside High School Orchestra for 5 years on French Horn and Double Bass.

Cramping pain in my leg when I try to walk

Intermittent Claudication “This is different from “night-cramps” Ietje van Stolk, (physiotherapist at Physical Sense and the centre for Senior Well-being) explains. This kind of cramping (sometimes called “window -shopping legs”) is triggered by normal exertion of the leg muscles and is typically caused by obstruction of the arteries. Sufferers have to find themselves a regular excuse to stop for a while to allow the blood flow to reach the cramped up muscles. The official name for this condition is Intermittent Claudication. Claudication is pain and/or cramping in the lower leg due to inadequate blood flow to the muscles. The pain usually causes the person to limp. The word “claudication” comes from the Latin “claudicare” meaning to limp. Claudication typically is felt while walking, and subsides with rest. It is commonly referred to as “intermittent” claudication because it comes and goes with exertion and rest. In severe claudication, the pain is also felt at rest. It is a painful condition that really “cramps people’s lifestyle”. The pain free walking distance tends to get shorter as the condition progresses. If you suffer from this condition it is crucial to understand that the body actually finds a way to
increase the blood flow to the legs IF THE DEMAND is there. It is like every thing in the body……..”use it or lose it”. Unfortunately many people with this condition end up in a vicious cycle; the pain stops the walking, and the lack of walking increases the problem. Exercise is recommended to greatly reduce symptoms and to increase pain free walking distance. Eight years ago on request of the vascular nurse in Christchurch hospital, Physical Sense started a two weekly circuit for Intermittent Claudication patients. The pilot program started with 50 clients. • 82% of all clients, experienced improvement in their walking distance • Quite a number of clients doubled their walking distance, for some it even became limitless. • After a year 88% of clients were still active • There was an exceptionally low dropout rate of only 8% • The 18% who did not notice a difference in relation to their walking distance still enjoyed all the other benefits of exercise (to heart, lungs, sugar levels, bone health,

balance and mood etc.) People always start in a group, so they get the benefit of a guided introduction to more exercise and the use of the gym. In the groups we are looking at 50-80+ year olds that are giving their legs a workout by using steppers, treadmills, stationary bikes and other exercise stations. That way they also benefit from working out with people who suffer the same problems. “It is amazing the support and wisdom people receive from each other” Ietje says. In this “circuit setup” every client can work in their own tempo, and people simply sit down and have a rest when the “cramping in the leg” becomes too much.
